Great hunter Birerdinç, left, and villagers surround a pig.

Villagers unable to cope with the damage to their fields and
gardens by wild pigs in Tarsus district of Mersin province,
turned to the famous hunter Ali Birerdinç for a solution. The
former journalist Birerdinç, who hosts a program on Yaban TV,
grabbed his rifle and came to Mersin from Istanbul.

Together with the villagers, Birerdinç went hunting for pigs in
the foothills of the Toros Mountains in the area of Çamlıyayla.
Nine pigs were killed in one day by Birerdinç and his crew. The
village chiefs of Çavdarlı and Meşelik villages, Cumali Yılmaz
and Mustafa Ak, stated that "the pigs have been ravaging our
fields and gardens. No crops are left.  We were afraid to leave
the village at night. We didn't know what to do so we turned to
Ali. God bless him!"

As for Birerdinç, he said that "when the villagers called I came
to the Toros to hunt.  The pig population is really out of control
here. Smart hunting is good for nature."

A retired teacher in Adana went hunting in the Bekirli area of
Karaisalı district in Adana on 9 December and this is what
happened:  Aysel Kenan (59) climbed a tree in her garden, where
she had gone with her husband to collect olives.  At the same

Kenan's house.

Thinking that Aysel hanım was a bird, A.A. fired into the tree
twice, hitting Aysel hanım in the head and stomach.  Aysel hanim
fell from the tree and A.A. fled the scene.

Aysel hanım's husband Ethem Kenan heard her cries and had her
taken to a hospital where she spent a week in intensive care. Still
in shock, Aysel hanım had this to say about the incident: "I was
gathering olives. Suddenly I heard a noise and there was blood
coming from my head.  I started to scream and the person who
shot me came to my side, saying 'I thought you were a bird. I
was hunting."  Then he backed away and left."

The Gendarmerie took A.A. into custody and he was released,
pendng trial.
