And put a speed limit on your lawyer jokes, too.

Lawyer Ali Can Çiçek is a member of the bar in Kırıkkale.  In March,
Çiçek was caught doing 122 kph in the Demirci Köyü Tunnel along
the Sinop-Samsun highway and fined 206 TL (about $60).  Çiçek
objected to the fine, claiming that there were no signs posting the
speed limit nor any radar-awareness notices.

Çiçek filed his objection with the court in Sinop, where the local
highway authority countered that there are 27 'radar control' signs along
the road and that the speed limit is 110 kph.  In its decision, the Sinop
court ruled that there is a 10% tolerance built into speed limit, making
it essentially a 121 kph speed limit.  That being the case, the court
ruled that Çiçek was driving one kph over the speed limit and did
not impose any penalty.

As for Çiçek, he asserted that this decision would serve as a precedent
henceforth for 'victims' like himself (!).

Köpeğe tecavüz etmekle suçlanıyordu! Gerçek şoke etti
In today's hypersensitive sexual harassment environment...

A photo that went viral on social media almost blackened the life of
an 80-year-old man in İkizli village of Çorum's Sungurlu district.
After the photo, supposedly depicting "someone raping a dog", was
published, the Gendarmerie went to the village and took Kazım Kapkıner
into custody for the offense.  The dog was taken to the Yörüklü
Gendarmerie post for an examination by a veterinarian but when no
evidence of rape was found the animal was put in a shelter.

Kapkıner explained that he was untieing a 5-meter chain wrapped
around the dog's leg when the picture was taken.  After being released
by the Gendarmerie, Kapkıner explained that "the dog belonged to my
neighbor who moved to Ankara.  I was keeping an eye on him in my
garden and had him tied to a tree.  When the dog began to whine I
saw that the chain had wrapped around his feet so I lifted the chain
over the dog's back to get it off him.  That's when, unbeknownst to
me, my picture was taken.  I was having tea in the morning when the
Gendarmerie came and hauled me off to jail."

Budding paparazzi Ergülü K. takes first step to fame and fortune.

The 'photographer' turned out to be 14-year-old Ergülü K., who
lamented that "the incident happened two or three days ago.  Uncle
Kazım was removing the chain from the dog so I took the picture
as a joke and sent it to my friends with the caption.  My friends
put it on social media.  I had no idea it would come to this. I've
apologized to Uncle Kazım and his family."

         Deep-fried fish that never die.

The mystery surrounding how and from where the fish that live in
a fountain called "balıklı göze" in Şebinkarahisar district of Giresun
province remains unsolved.   The local people believe that anyone
who eats those fish will suffer all sorts of calamities and that the
three fish in the fountain never increase or decrease in number.

Mayor Şahin Yılancı, who was born in İkioğul village, explained
the legend, saying "according to an old wives tale, there was a
stingy man whose wife and daughter-in-law were generous.  When
the women distributed bread to their neighbors the man threw them
both into an oven.  In an instant, the oven turned into a boiling
water spring and the women turned into fish.  The daughter-in-law
was pregnant so that's why there is third fish but it's seldom seen."

Freely admits that he needs all the help he can get.

Canan Aktuna, who said she had witnessed many strange incidents
in the garden of the house her grandfather left her, noted that anyone
who eats one of the fish would suffer untold disasters. She went on
to say that "in my childhood there were so many people making
wishes here that fishermen couldn't get past them.  The fish live
inside a spring of boiling water within an oven-shaped rock. For
as long as I can remember there were two fish and once in a while
a third was seen.  But there was never a time when there were more
or less fish.  One time, a citizen put in a pipe to draw water to his
house and he ate a fish that got stuck in the pipe.  But he suffered
every kind of calamity after that.  Nevertheless, the number of
fish in the spring doesn't ever change."

Belgrad Ormanı'nda kumar çadırı basıldı
              Police haunted the bingo forest.

Gambling was banned in Turkey in 1998 and since then the vice has
gone underground, with gaming operations going in basements, fake
political party salons, remote villas, coffeehouses and residences.  The
Istanbul Police Chief Mustafa Çalışkan has focused on stamping out
'Ankara Kumarı' games of 'tombala' (like 'bingo') operations.

You'd have to be one committed bingo player to make this trek.

In a recent case, police learned that a gambling operation had been set
up deep in Belgrad Forest, between Bahçeköy and Kemerburgaz in
Sarıyer district.  Police raided the 30 square-meter tent used for the
gaming operation and caught 24 people red-handed.  A tombala
machine, game cards and gambling money totaling 600 TL (about
$250) was seized.

Gambling patrons left their cars at Kirazlıbent, near the Bahçeköy
entrance to Belgrad Forest and were then transported by tractor (!)
to the tent two kilometers into the forest.  The tractor's battery was
used to provide electricity to light the tent, which was situated
about 7-8 kilometers from the center of Bahçeköy.

Science Teacher Lights Way for Kids

Taking science out of the lab and onto the roof.

The Galatasaray Elementary School is found in Çubuklu village
in Van's Çaldıran district on Turkey's border with Iran.  Mahmut
Çakır (27) was appointed as the science teacher at the school 4
years ago as his first assignment.  Mahmut's first action was to set
up a science laboratory at the school, which was founded by the
Galatasaray University Foundation in Istanbul.

As Mahmut began teaching, though, frequent electrical outages
plagued his efforts so he rolled up his sleeves to build a wind turbine (!).
First, he made the blades from plastic pipes and designed a tail out of
scrap iron.  Mahmut had a motor he found repaired and after 3.5
months there was a small-scale wind turbine atop the school that
now provides all the electricity the school needs.  In addition, Mahmut
has started a 'Nature Corridor' project at the school, planting 300
saplings in the 'Galatasaray Forest' he has set up with his students.

Mahmut conducted a science fair for his students at the school with
a 10,000 TL (about $3K) grant from TÜBİTAK (Turkey's science
organization) and the National Education Ministry gave him the
"Creativity in Teaching and Training Award", which Mahmut will
receive at a ceremony today.  Noting that the climate conditions of
the region are quite severe, Mahmut commented that "in these
difficult conditions my students brave the winter weather just to
spend time and take classes with their teacher."
